In a nationwide action, the Danish Veterinary Agency has investigated if food producers had made false nutrition or health claims for their products. A total of 253 visits to retailers and wholesalers were made by the agency. In more than 30% of the cases, sanctions were issued and rectifying measures imposed, and in three cases, fines were issued.

In comparison to the last nationwide action in 2019, the number of cases where sanctions were issued had significantly increased.  In 2019, 234 premises were inspected, and only 20% of the visits triggered measures by the agency.

Representatives of the agency stated that this year’s number of non-compliances was far too high. Examples for unapproved claims were “Super nutritious” and “Strengthens your digestion with wheat fiber”.

The agency stated that it will continue to focus on checking nutrition and health claims for pre-packaged foods, to ensure that consumers are not misled.
